Where the best mead in the world gathers to compete!

Hello again!

The Mazer Cup International Home Meadmaker Competition entries are now open for 2012.  This year promises to be an even larger competition than last year with (over 520 entries) and is still the largest mead-only competition we know of anywhere.

Please let your homebrew clubs, other mead enthusiasts and anyone that would like to go toe to toe with the world’s best home meadmakers.  Our 2010 Best of Show winner was Michal Saks, a home meadmaker from Poland so when I say the world’s best home meadmakers, I really mean it.

You may enter the competition at:

Good luck and send your best!

NOTICE: There will be NO PUBLIC EVENTS in 2012
Unfortunately this is a competition year only and no public tastings or other public events will be hosted. The awards ceremony will be by ticket admittance only and will be very limited due to the size of the room and public fire code. Public events will return in 2013 once the MCI has completed our incorporation efforts.

You heard it here first! We are very pleased to announce that the Commercial Meadery Competition entries are now open! Click here to enter and best of luck!

We have activated the volunteer registration form and are looking forward to seeing you again this year. You may click here to fill out the volunteer form!

Save the Dates!

The Mazer Cup International will be held on Friday, March 2, and Saturday March 3, 2012 at the Boulder Outlook Hotel! Be there or be rectangulaire!

Everyone throw a big THANK YOU to Monica Signer, our emerita Director of Volunteer Services. She did a wonderful job while she was on the Board of Directors and we wish her and her family all the best! Kyle Byerly has taken over responsibility for the volunteers this year and will be supported by the rest of the Mazer Cup Board of Directors as necessary.

UPDATE ON MJCP EXAM:

OK, so we petitioned for an exam date several months ago, and we heard back from the BJCP a few weeks back. What we heard really surprised us. Not only has the BJCP cut back on the number of exams they will allow annually, we needed to schedule our exam over a year in advance.

We were close to that, but not close enough. Once we found that out, we requested an exam date in 2013 for the MCI 2013 to ensure we get our date without being left out in the cold again. This highlights the need for the Mazer Cup to set our own judging standards, categories and guidelines for judging qualifications. We are in the process of doing so, but are focused on making the MCI 2012 the best competition we can. Until we’ve made that happen, the rest will be moving, but at a very slow pace.

Thank you all for your patience and understanding. This is frustrating for us as well.

Pete Bakulic, Director of Operations, The Mazer Cup International

UPDATE ON PUBLIC TASTING:
Sometimes things just don’t work out as we hope they will. Once that happens things tend to head south. We were in the process of checking on what types of permits we needed for a public-pour, when we came upon an unfortunate discovery. In order to legally hold a public-pour/mixer/festival, etc. we need to turn into an not-for-profit corporation.

A couple of situations that were out of our control drove us in this direction, and unfortunately as it stands we will not be able to do either a public pour, or the winners circle this year. We couldn’t risk having the TTB show up at the competition and not be 100% legal, and the Hotel also had concerns about the public-pour from a liability perspective. The good news is that we are in the process of incorporating and will be ready for 2013 and any surprise visits by the TTB!

OK folks, we’re getting ready to update the website with entry dates, shipping dates and additional MCI 2012 Information. Keep checking here, the MCI Website and our blog. Thanks for sticking with us all year, we love the dedication and enthusiasm!

Great news! The Mazer Cup International committee held a teleconference this evening and we are moving forward with plans for a public pour at the MCI 2012. We’re working out the details with the Outlook Hotel, and checking any legal wrangling we need to do as well.

We’re really excited about hosting a public pour next year!, so all you meaderies be sure to set a couple of cases aside and come on over to Boulder, Colorado for the MCI 2012.

This is going to be a blast!
